In the days leading up to the RBC Heritage, Argentina’s Emiliano Grillo was looking to improve the performance of his long and mid irons. In my experience, what that usually means is the pursuit of height/launch and or forgiveness. The equipment decisions that TOUR players will make (at times) can be very similar to the ones you and I do. More forgiveness, tighter dispersion, “it looks cool”….stuff like that. Not in this instance:)
Grillo who has been in our Apex Pro ’19 (4-6) for quite some time was looking to let go of the “help” a cavity back provides and get back to the control he’s used to with the Apex MB ’21.
Every once in a while I will get an update from our team on the Callaway Tour Truck and all I can do is chuckle… it’s funny how good these players are.
In this instance, it added up to a T-2 at Hilton Head and some much-needed momentum for Grillo going into the summer.
I caught up with Callaway Manager Jacob Davidson on Grillo’s small tweak and this is what he had to say:
“Emiliano is a world-class ball striker and doesn’t miss the center of the face very often. He wanted to go back to a familiar look (all MB) at the top end of the set because he feels like having more control over trajectory and spin far outweighs forgiveness.” “Having the ability to shape shots into some of these greens means more to his success than forgiveness on the occasional mishit.”
Hmmm…feels like something those trick skydivers would say. “Parachutes are too slow, gimme the squirrel suit.”
