If you’ve followed World of Wunder over the past three years you would know that ball switches (especially on Tour) is not only rare but it takes a bunch of chips to fall to actually get there.
Why? Because we build whole bags around the golf ball. Everything from Putter to driver is glued together by the correct ball. Sound, Feel, Spin, Launch, Speed etc. If your bag is the house, the ball is the load bearing wall.
This week at East Lake it happened at a rather unusual time. Akshay Bhatia who has experienced great success with Chrome Tour made the switch into Chrome Tour X for one main reason…Spin. And even more interesting is he’s switching balls specifically to combat the concrete greens at Eastlake.
According to performance Rep Johnny Thompson the ball switch came as a reaction to his Monday practice round…
“From 6i on, the greens are so firm (at Eastlake) that you need everything you have to get the ball to descend at its steepest angle to have a chance to hold. There could be roughly
7 shots out of 18 coming in from greater than 6i and 7i, down, wasn’t a huge difference overall but CTX will give him his best chance to hold the greens this week with the mid to
Longer stuff.”
I’ll keep you posted on whether it stays in but gotta say, this is pretty cool and a testament to Shay’s talent. Typically golf ball switches are a HUGE deal. This one feels pretty easy.
