Apex UW Tour seeding, the Kiz story

This thing is fu$$ing awesome..

-Kevin Kisner on Apex UW

When I walked onto the range this morning at The Summit Club for the PGA Tour’s CJ Cup and asked Kevin Kisner what he thought, he just looked at me smiled and said….the above.

It actually says a lot about what we have on our hands with the Apex UW. Kiz is one of the guys we have on-staff that gets very attached to his sticks. If something is just a hair-off, it’s gone. With a niche club like the Apex UW, it was interesting to see his excitement.

Kisner, who has been in a Mavrik SZ 7-wood (that he loved) for over a year, recently went on a swing analysis system called GEARS. This system broke down the golf swing from every conceivable angle and gave Kiz some insight that led to some changes. He discovered that his lie angles in the current setup were a bit too upright, causing him to raise the handle a bit. The shift was to flatten that angle which gave him lower hands at impact, and got his start lines where he wanted them.

Since those swing changes kicked in, his 7-wood that worked perfectly before were now flying out of a slightly higher window.

Callaway Tour Rep Dean Tekyl built up an Apex UW (19@17) with a Project X HZURDUS RDX Smoke Black (80TX) at a flatter lie angle than his 7-wood and hybrid. Immediately the ball was starting to fly out of the familiar window and gave Kiz the ability to hit some lower, more penetrating shots that weren’t dipping too much in spin. In addition, he was hitting the UW 8-yards further on average.

A club in that 240-245 carry zone (with some new shots) blends perfectly off his 3-wood and into his Apex UT 21 that he has had in the bag for some time. Kiz also switched back into the MCA MMT 125TX in his irons.

Kisner’s new Apex UW Numbers VS Mavrik SZ 7-Wood

Apex UW (19)

Launch: 10.5
Spin: 3700RPM
Carry: 246

Mavrik SZ 7-Wood

Launch: 12
Spin: 3500
Carry: 237

Controlling spin is just as important in the long clubs as it is with the bottom of the bag. The constant feedback we are getting thus far is that Apex UW doesn’t have any Hot Spots on it. What that means on Tour is simply that players can rely on consistent spin up and down the face. They don’t over spin out of the bottom of the heel, and you don’t get the knuckleballs out of the top of the toe. On Tour, that’s the definition of forgiveness.

Out here, it’s all about mitigating chaos (violent ups and down in spin), and with the speeds, these players are hitting it, “hot spots” are more penalizing than they have ever been.

This is a pic of what we built this morning, the word is getting out.

The Apex UW will have a cult following; mark my words. It’ll be one of those clubs players hang onto for a long time. I’m POUNDING mine!!!!
