Fall Fitting series Part 3: Beauty and Brawn, Introducing Epic max star

DISCLAIMER: This is not a TOUR piece, gear head article, or anything I’m used to writing. This is for my Dad and acknowledging a moment where I saw his game transform in a way we haven’t seen in a long time.

I always wondered what kind of clubs Tony Stark would play. Yes, that’s a real thing. What would they look like? They’d have to be cool looking first and foremost, long, mindless, and two ticks shy of cheating.

I can see him in his lab telling Jarvis what he wants, and at the tail end of the speech, he’d utter, “and Jarvis, make em sexy.”

Introducing the Callaway Epic Star Max Driver, Fairway Woods Hybrids and Irons

So what do we have here?

Ultra-premium, SUPER light materials, and curb appeal for days. Hell, the Driver shaft is 30 grams!! That’s unheard of. Designed to run as a whole family or separate, the Epic Max Star was designed literally for a good time. It’s the kind of set you bust out when you play with someone you want to impress. Typically when something looks this good, it’ll fall short somewhere, not here. They are premium looking and, for the right player, serious in performance.

Why do I say the right player?

These clubs are designed to enhance the user experience for players that simply don’t swing all that fast. Whether it’s your avid golfer snowbird like my dad and his crew or female golfers in any demo that wanna hit bombs and look amazing.

Yes, they look cool, but what do they do?

First off, the Epic Max Star is for the player who likes high-end materials and needs the beefed-up help that our Max family offers. If Apex ‘21 is a Mercedes AMG, the Epic Star Max is a Maybach. That’s the best analogy I can think of.

The irons are long like DCB and feel like Apex Pro. The Woods are Epic Max in DNA but built to perform at lighter weights, and the hybrids follow suit.

My Dad is the Prototype Epic Max Star player:

The big guy (John Sr) is a 75-year-old, 17 handicap that plays 3-4 times a week. He is challenged by distance, ball speed, height, and lack of spin. So, in other words, the golfing Gods took it all away. HOWEVER, he keeps the ball in front of him and has a VERY salty short game.

So how would Epic Star Max help a guy like this? Well, this set is actually optimized for my old man and a ton of his Palm Desert Snowbird buddies. I can’t go out and find him extra distance at his current speed, which is topped out at about 75-80MPH with a driver. This is where the Epic Star Max becomes downright incredible. The whole set is feather-light, I mean FEATHER light. We are talking 36G shafts in the driver; that’s 52 Grams lighter overall than Epic Max.

The irons offer a very fast forgiving face at a feather overall weight and give “Old Bud” every bit of help he would ever need. They launch VERY high and pack a serious ball speed punch. For a guy like my dad, it’s like going back 15 years. No bull 💩.

Epic Star Max vs my Dad’s gamers:

Driver: Picked 4 degrees of launch, 8 MPH of ball speed and 15 yards on AVG

Fairway Woods: Launch went up from 7 to 10 and his carry went up 12 yards

Hybrids: To be fair, he hits his current hybrids pretty damn well, but in this case, he hit the Epic Star Max higher and got roughly 5 yards more carry

Irons: This is where it got stupid. He not only launched it WAYYYY higher with Epic Star Max, but he was also a full club longer 7-PW. That’s at the same lofts!!!

Specs:

Epic Max Star comes in Driver (10.5, 12) 3-wood, 4-wood, 5-wood, 7-wood and 9-wood, 4H, 5H, 6H, 7H and 8H AND 5-AW. All shafted up with super light premium UST shafts.

If I was to break down and buy my old man a set for Xmas, this is what I would order up.

Driver: Epic Max Star (12)

4-wood: Epic Max Star (16.5)

7-Wood: Epic Max Star (20)

9-wood: Epic Max Star (23)

Hybrid #1: Epic Max Star 6H (26)

Hybrid #2: Epic Max star 7H (29)

Irons: 8-AW

SW: Jaws MD5 56W High Bounce

Chipper: Odyssey X-Act Chipper (he has one now and its a game changer)

Ball: CSX

This is a total unicorn set for my dad. It not only offers him launch and ball speed most important, but with the CSX, he can take advantage of his short game even more. Players in my Dad’s category tend to be launch and distance challenged, and until now, it was hard to find a balanced set at a lighter weight they could actually swing faster.

VERDICT?

Obviously, the Epic Max star isn’t anything you will find out on TOUR, but I still find it exciting when I can find someone like my Dad a club and hand him 10-15 yards without doing anything at all. That’s like giving him back 15 years of his Golf life. There hasn’t been a piece of equipment I have seen in a long while that can say the same.

A video is coming to our YouTube channel very soon, and you will see firsthand what these things do in Old Bud’s hands; it was unreal.

Part 4 of the Fall Fitting Series will deal with Putters and how important proper CG location is the secret sauce to making putts.

Love the clubs but hate the color. I don;t think it has a rich look but actually looks tacky to me.

These are something I would be interested in buying. I will be 75 come January and in my younger years I was a 5 handicap. I do struggle with today’s golf sets.

Where can I get DETAILED information on special order, custom shaft lengths, and fairway & hybrid lofts? At 76 and an 8-handicap, I’ve got to have a set of these Epic Max Stars!

They launch for pre order on the 21st and I’m sure if you find an authorized Callaway fitter, they can dial you in.

As usual you get my hopes up saying the driver comes in 10.5 and 12.
You then slice me off at the knees and say the 12 is for RH only.
Have a heart there are old LH players also. I have had to go outside Callaway for a more lofted driver. The same applies to more lofted fairway woods and hybrids.

You guys are killing me. Exactly what I face – 75 to 80 mph driver swing speed, ball flight challenged. I just bought an Epic Speed and now you come out with something specific for me. How do I keep the price tag away from my wife?

Your prototype Dad is my mirror image, but have a couple years on him @ 78. The Epic Max star set sounds like a performance upgrade for he and myself.
Just wondering what that set that your considering as a gift for him will cost?

If you have any more questions on them let me know and ill keep you posted and how Old Bud does on the course with them, he’s itching to get his hands on a full set

I’m 68 and my swing speed has dropped.I’ve been looking for a 4 wood as both my golf coach and local Callaway fitting centre recommend I should retire my 15 degree 3 wood.

I see you would fit your father with a 4 wood but there is no 4 wood in the specifications.

Love the article and information. HATE the shaft color and would not put them in my bag as a result. Get a light black or silver shaft option then it would.

My swing speed is 120+, age 74. I love my Epic Max driver purchased in May 2021. Why should I consider this Epic Star and why is it so expensive?

I went to Club Champion for a refit on Dec 1st. Was not happy with the Big Bertha Reva driver with a after market expensive shaft. The fitter said I have something new from Callaway, let’s try it. I wasn’t sure what I was seeing on the screen but he said I was getting a 20% increase in distance. SOLD! Just came in. I played one round. I started getting the shots I wanted about half way thru. I wasn’t on my home course that I’ve been playing at for 25 years to really know how much more distance I’ve gained, but I’m pretty excited with what I was seeing. I’m 73, small stature and play at a 17 to 19 index.
