The story of Jon Rahm and his new magic wand

This is a story I posted a few weeks ago when our newly crowned U.S Open Champion made the switch from the 2B10 into his custom Rossie S OG with a Micro Hinge insert. The putter swap proved to be very successful at Memorial where he basically lapped the field before you know what transpired. The putts he made on #17 and #18 at Torrey were the exact ones he was looking to improve on. With his stroke, having a blade that releases a bit more allows Jon to trust that he won’t pull or push those left to right 10 footers and as we all watched yesterday, his instincts and the hard work of Odyssey Rep Joe Toulon paid off.

Here is the story from Memorial and some new pics of the putter:

From Memorial WeeK:

World #3 Jon Rahm who has been a Top-10 machine since joining the #teamcallaway in 2021 has made a pretty interesting putter switch that harkens back to the early days of Odyssey. JR will be putting an Odyssey Rossie S model in play at Muirfield Village and the story behind the switch is a study in just how in tune Rahm is with his equipment.

Statistically, Jon has been pretty solid all season but to win at the level he wants to, it’s the small tweaks that take him from multiple Top-10’s to multiple wins, especially Majors. Torrey Pines and the US Open is where the focus is and as a player who has had a ton of success at that course, JR wants to leave no stone unturned. Oddly enough his bag overall has stayed pretty constant since the west coast. It’s only the putter that has seen any tweaks going from a red stroke lab shaft in his 2B10 into a heavier steel profile.

The switch took place last week at the Ely Callaway performance center where Jon was in working with our head of Tour Operations Tim Reed and Odyssey Rep Joe Toulon prepping for the US Open.

Jon showed up at ECPC really excited about the Rossie S (with no sightlines) and once Joe and the team at Odyssey analyzed it on Quintic, what Jon was feeling was 100% matching up with the data. Jon is a player that doesn’t respond well to anything linear when it comes to his putters, he stands pretty far from the ball at address, and any sight lines tend to disrupt his visuals. The last piece of the puzzle was going into the Micro Hinge Star insert that has a crisper feel and comes off the face a bit hotter than White Hot OG. He currently has the only Rossie model with the Micro Hinge Star in circulation. Tour Sauce. Start lines, feel, and roll out were exactly what he wanted. Not all players have that kind of equipment sensitivity but he does, it’s quite crazy.

“Jon felt he was missing too many putts in the 8-12′ range. We had noticed a few things that have recently changed in his stroke and after testing some at the ECPC, it was clear that he was more comfortable with the Rossie slant. The slant neck allowed him to feel the putter face rotate open during the backstroke which allowed him to feel that he could release the toe without pulling putts.”

-Odyssey Tour Rep Joe Toulon

JR’s putter from has been pretty good overall but to him, it wasn’t quite matching up to what he was feeling with his stroke. Odyssey sent him a few options after the PGA and went as far as to fast-track a custom milled head to try (must be nice lol). The head was milled and ready in less than a week which is a miracle if you know how that process works (it usually takes weeks). The putter in question was based on a model Odyssey will be releasing later this year and Jon will continue to test it as the season goes.

Ultimately it was the Rossie S that won the day. (see specs below)

I’m curious what kind of toe hang his putter has to promote the putter head releasing better? I have a tendency to push putts and I was fitted for something face balanced, and I can’t help but think that’s not the right answer. Thanks for the awesome info and great job today on pga radio!!

It has a bit of toe hang but nothing extreme. Great thing to try!!

I switched from a Versa mallet toe hang to a Rossie. Less face rotation in the Rossie because of heel and toe inserts. Maybe you need MORE face rotation in a putter.

I play it with the regular insert and it has about 45 degrees of toe hang.

Been rocking a Rossie S since February and it is a lovely all around putter from any distance…assuming you like mallets.

I love the flat lie and the 37” shaft, both of which specs allow Rahmbo to get away from the ball and not be on top of it. Arguably the greatest putter of the modern era Isao Aoki was so far from the ball that the toe was even in the air. Seve did the same thing and he was a great putter.

This setup avoids pulls. Great design!!! Love you, Rahmbo!

if this putter style was made with a milled face or toulon face i’d buy it . the inserts are way too soft for many players and odyssey should be able to create these through custom orders for different styles.

Hello fellow golf junkies, couldn’t help noticing JRs bag has an extra #8 iron, obviously not a gamer, what is it?

Nice rossie putter. It’s a shame odyssey has decided not to offer a Rossie putter in a left handed version.
