VERY few move the needle like Phil Mickelson and as I sat on the truck during a SLOWWWW Wednesday morning I noticed my cell phone start to buzz abnormally. “What’s the story with Phil’s putter?” was the predominant question.
At that moment I had no clue. I had literally just walked off the putting green having held his normal gamer in my hand. Everything seemed normal to me…right? Well as I’ve come to learn with Phil, when it comes to his gear, ANYTHING is possible. Little did I know that lefty had a new custom one-off Arm-lock wand hiding in his bag. WRX snaps a photo of Phil putting with it, people see it and BOOM my phone rings. God the world moves fast.
Heres the story straight outta the mouth of the guy that built it, Gerrit Pon:
“So Keith Kingston and I decided to make a prototype putter for Phil last winter where the CG was in the middle of the face (rather than towards the heel). So we removed some weight from the heel by using aluminum and added some weight to the toe by using tungsten. We also designed it with more offset and a bit more upright (than gamer) so that we wouldn’t need to bend it. Phil tried it briefly at Pebble when it was first done and then sidelined it until last week when he asked to have it set up as an arm lock.”
New Putter Specs:
Odyssey PM Milled Proto Blade
I’ll keep updating as to whether it makes it in play this week in Memphis. Stay Tuned:)
