Deep Dives

Inside the Bag of Xander Schauffele (UPDATED w/ CSX LS and new 3-wood)

Here is a DEEP look into Xanders bag, ENJOY!!

Driver: Callaway Epic Speed 💎💎💎 (9, 6GF, 6GB)
Shaft: Graphite Design Tour AD BB 7 X (Custom Black, 45.5, Tipped 1, D3)

Jacob Davidson:  The Epic Speed Triple Diamond fit right into what Xander loves to see. He likes a driver that helps eliminate the left side all while not dipping too low in spin. Our Triple Diamond heads have a straighter top line and a more player-friendly (compact) shape that our staff loves.

  • Loft (actual): 8.9 degrees
  • Length: 45 1/2 inches
  • Setting: NS
  • Weight: 194.2-gram head weight, D3 swing weight
  • Tipping: 1 inch

3-wood: Epic Speed 💎💎💎 (15@14)
Shaft: Graphite Design Tour AD DI 7TX (43.25, Tipped 1.5, D3)

Kellen Watson: Xanders old Rogue 3-Wood was consistently catching the mid 170’s in ball speed and simply just going too far off the tee. In addition, he wasn’t getting enough spin, off the deck

The Epic Speed 💎💎💎 was giving Xander the perfect distance number off the peg and turf with a bit more spin for control. The 3-wood is a gapping club for Xander so with his speed he needs to ensure it’s not going crazy far.

7-wood: Mavrik Sub Zero (20@18.8)
Shaft: Graphite Design Tour AD DI 9X (Black, 41.5 Inches, Tipped 2, D3)

Kellen Watson: The switch into the 7 wood came for the same reason as the 3-Wood, we were seeing distance gains in the previous 5-Wood that was just too far for that part of the bag.  The 5-Wood was touching 170 ball speed, so with the loft increase in the 7 Wood combined with a heavier (and shorter) shaft, we were able to dial back yardages to a previous yardage and launch profile he felt comfortable with. That’s a part of Xanders bag that has to be extremely versatile and proper yardage gapping is ESSENTIAL.

Irons: Callaway Apex TCB (4-PW)
Shafts: True Temper Dynamic Gold Tour Issue X100

Jacob Davidson: The Apex TCB is similar to the Apex Pro “dot” heads he had success with, but in this case, he liked the feel a bit more and launch and spin with the longer irons increased which at a place like Augusta is a necessity.

  • Loft (4-PW): 22.5, 26.5, 30.75, 35, 38.5, 43, 47 degrees
  • 6-iron spin: 6,600 RPM
  • Swing weight: D1.5 (4, 5) D2 (6-P)
  • Lie (4-PW): 60.5, 61, 61.5, 62, 62.5, 63, 63.5 degrees
  • Length: Standard Callaway length

Wedges: Callaway Jaws MD5 (52-10S), Titleist Vokey Design SM6 (56-10 @57), Titleist Vokey Design SM8 WedgeWorks (60-T @61)
Shafts: True Temper Dynamic Gold Tour Issue X100

Jaws MD5 Specs

  • Length: 35.5 inches
  • Loft: 52 degrees
  • Lie: 63.5 degrees
  • Swing weight: D3

Vokey Specs

  • Length: +1/8 inches over standard
  • Loft: 57, 61 degrees
  • Lie: 63.5 degrees
  • Swing weight: D3

Jacob Davidson on (52-10S): Low launch and a ton of spin. This wedge gives him the ability to really flight it down while maintaining spin on off-speed shots, which can be a tough combo to find. In combo with the Chrome Soft X, it was a perfect combination.

Grips: Golf Pride MCC (Black/White 58R, 3 wraps top, 2 wraps mid, 1 total)

Putter: Odyssey O-Works #7 CH Red

Joe Toulon on Xanders Odyssey: The Alignment features were a big factor in Xander’s landing on this option. The top line and back tracer lines really work with his eyes. The CH provides him a little bit of toe hang and it matches up nicely with his path and arc. He’s used face-balanced options in #7’s before and will typically only use something with little-to-no toe hang.

Specs

  • Model: O-Works Red 7 CH
  • Loft/lie: 3.5/71.5  degrees (backup putter is at 4 loft)
  • Alignment: Top and tracers in white
  • Insert: White Hot
  • Length: 34 3/8 inches to end of grip
  • SuperStroke Traxion 2.0 Tour (10 grams)
  • Swingweight: D7.5
  • Weight: 516.5 gams
  • Shaft: Black stepped shaft

*His loft varies week to week depending on grass/green conditions. He works on Quintic with his putting coach Derek Uyeda to determine what loft is necessary each week

Ball: Chrome Soft X LS Proto

Kellen Watson: Xander and his father have worked hard over the past year on his physical fitness and it has shown. He has gone from a low 170’s MPH ball speed player into the high 170/low 180’s with the driver. That speed has bled down thru the bag and with his current ball (CSX) the spin windows were starting to live outside the comfortable windows.

As mentioned above this is where our Tour team has to solve a riddle and in this case, the fact he was looking to kill spin across the bag made it a bit easier. At times the request comes focused on a specific club, Driver, Fairways, Irons, etc. Those situations can be tweaked with a shaft change, a different style head, or groove configuration.

Once the Chrome Soft X LS was introduced into the testing the riddle was ultimately solved. Xander dropped 200 RPMs roughly across the bag and once again he was living in a spin window he was familiar with. To get more in-depth, Xander would be considered on the higher end of the spin chart. With a 6 iron for example he lives around 6100 RPMs with his current speed and CSX LS (came down from 6500), and with the Driver 2100 RPMs (from 2400 before the switch) that decrease is IDEAL. The rule out here is basically 1000 RPMs for the number on the club IE 7 iron at 7000 + or – 200 RPMs up or down depending on the launch and descent angles of the player.

Grips: Golf Pride MCC (58R, Black/White, Logo Down) 3 wraps at the top(not butt end), 2 wraps mid, 1 long. Trying to reduce taper.
