Jaws Raw Full Toe: Introducing the “J” Grind

I can’t believe it’s been almost two years since the release of the Jaws Full Toe. It was an ambitious wedge offering into the market especially coming off of the PM Signature model that, by that point, had a cult following. I would know; I had two in the bag myself and thought that they were one of the great “around the green” tools ever conceived. But they had their limitations. Due to the aggressive camber in the leading edge and substantial offset, the PM was not user-friendly on any full shot. To make them work, you needed the hands of a surgeon.

Then onto Jaws Full Toe, which improved on the limitations of the PM, was a fantastic first offering, but for most players, what it lacked was forgiveness that fell in line with the size and idea of the head. Once again, it was unreal in some cases, but for some players, especially on-tour, it lacked the things that most of the players out here demand in any wedge, versatility and forgiveness.

The “C” Grind that was on the OG Full Toe was based on a Tour favorite and also featured a very straight leading edge (better on full shots) and a low to mid bounce profile. It was a REALLY good wedge. I played it all that summer and fall and LOVED it.

Make no mistake, it did get its day in the sun, Jon Rahm put on a clinic for the first three rounds of the 2021 Northern Trust Open…

BUT, there is always room to get better…

Introducing the “J” Grind which was the brain child of Callaway Wedge R&D Lead Designer Brian Herr, Associate Designer Jacob Sanborn and the Legend Roger Cleveland.

This is what Jacob Sanborn had to say on the “J”:

“The current Full Toe offering has a type of C grind on it with a moderate to low bounce angle and a fairly narrow total sole. This sole was not as versatile as I felt it could be, especially for the size of face that product has. The player could never really open the blade up and have the wedge rest on that relief sole. Due to the lower bounce angle the sole also had little to no camber from heel to toe and was much flatter than it should be.

The new Jaws Raw Full Toe wedge grind, the J grind, is a sort of mash up of several different grinds I have played, experimented with, and developed over my time working with wedges. The total sole is wider than the previous generation. It has a higher bounce angle, very aggressive heel relief, a nearly full-soled toe, and camber from heel to toe. The aggressive heel relief helps the golfer achieve maximum versatility on shorter shots allowing them to open the blade easily, while the toe side width helps with full shots.”

“The overall increase in bounce and camber on the sole helps the golfer with forgiveness at impact, attempting to reduce surface area of the sole that is in contact with the turf.

In addition to the new sole grind, the team with the help of Roger, made some changes to the profile. We added top line curvature (radius), added face height in the heel, and we addedabout .04” offset. We also added the chamfer and the usage of tungsten similar to the rest of the JAWS Raw line.

All in all, I think we have added a very versatile, and forgiving sole grind into our line upwith the J-grind. I’m excited for the consumer to pick one of these wedges up at their local shop and see just how much fun you can have hitting shots around the green. I look forward to learning from this, building on this, and deploying great products in the future.”

Going forward…

I’ll be taking these out for a spin over the next month to dig in hard and report back after some on-course testing. In the few shots I have taken I will say that the ball definitely wants to come out lower which I love and the “J” grind has plenty of relief for around the greens and is REALLY good on full shots.

The new “J” Grind will be offered in 54/10, 56/10, 58/10, 60/10 with a Dynamic Gold Spinner and PX Catalyst.
