Tour Report: Waste Management Phoenix Open

The best way to describe it is like going to Coachella, and a golf tournament broke out.

This week the Callaway Tour Team cruised up the I-10 to TPC Scottsdale for the WMPO. The energy and atmosphere of this place are unlike any other venue. The best way to describe it is like going to Coachella, and a golf tournament broke out.

It was quite the social event, with multiple people coming on the truck for a quick TOUR.

On-site for the festivities was Tour head Tim Reed, Tour Manager Jacob Davidson, Kellen Watson, Simon Wood, Greg Shaw, and Odysseys Joe Toulon.

The Counts:

Putter #1 w/ 50 in play
Driver #2 w/ 30 in play (27 Rogue ST, 90%💪🏼)

Let’s get into the nuggets for this week and if you missed the stories from Mon/Tues, here are the links:

Danny Lee added some new sticks

This week, new Callaway Staffer Danny Lee had two new sticks in the bag. The first is a new Jaws MD5 60/08W. This particular grind is increasing in popularity due to its low bounce/wide sole profile. It’s a great blend for versatility, and it’s amazing out of the sand/rough.

Lee also added a brand new Rogue ST LS I 5-wood (18@17.75) to the bag to match his 3-wood. Lee liked this head’s high launch/low spin aspect and told me it’s quite a launcher off the tee. The set-up is shafted up with a Fujikura Ventus Black 9X.

Talor Gooch puts a new Putter in the bag

2021 RSM Champion Talor Gooch swapped out his 5K #2 for a WH OG #7 with a plumbers neck. Talor is as much a feel player as anyone on our staff and wanted a new look around the greens to see if that would spark some new momentum. Sometimes that trick works LOL.

The new putter is at 35 inches with an grey Odyssey Stroke Lab shaft.

Si Woo and Emi Grillo swap into new irons

One of my favorite parts of this job is to roll up on a bag and see a brand new set of irons in there. In this case, Si Woo Kim and Emiliano Grillo both got new sets. The switch for Si Woo came in January, who was looking for a better combo of launch and spin VS his Apex Pro (double dots) 19’s and Grillo, who was in Apex MB’s previously wanting more forgiveness and a bit higher launch.

Grillo also made some shaft switches to his Driver and 3-wood going into a PX RDX Black 65TX in his driver (Rogue ST 💎💎💎 9) and the blue profile 75TX in his 3-wood (Rogue 3+).

💎💎💎 fairways hit the truck

Not going to divulge much on this, but Rahm, Xander, Grace, and Burns all tested the new new this week in Scottsdale. Here are some pics to whet the appetite. Don’t worry; I’ll explain the tour heads VERY soon.

Burns 💎💎💎T with a Fuji Ventus Black 8X

Rahm 💎💎💎T with an Aldila Tour Green 85TX

Ryan Moore went full Gear Junky

Lots of testing for Ryan Moore this week as he continues to hunt for the right combo in his 3-wood and 4-iron. This week he went with an Epic Speed 💎💎💎T 3-wood with a Graphic Design Tour AD IZ 7X in his 3-wood and an Apex Hybrid with a Fujikura Ventus Blue HY 9X. Shot shape and feel is what he’s chasing with these, and as a player who relies mostly on precision to compete, that part of the bag needs to be dialed. According to Ryan the rest of the bag is as goos as its even been.
