W.O.W Journal #004

This company is in a ridiculously good position to transcend and I’m confident I jumped on the Callaway train at the perfect time.

Back on the road……..for a loooonnggg time.

After a month-long stay with my family, I’m back on the road for a long one. This is a dream job make no mistake but with Covid restrictions (and my home being Toronto) it’s a perfect storm of logistical 💩. Having to leave my fiancé and two young boys behind for what could be up to 2 1/2 months is a tall task. It’s hard, but the work must be done!!!!

As I sit here writing this on Tuesday afternoon I’m in an empty truck that beyond the humming of the generator there is only the pounding of my keyboard. It’s a bit surreal to have access to my new office so to speak. For years all I’ve wanted was to just get on a truck let alone work on one week in and week out. This whole situation is just nuts!! But hey, what the hell, if anyone is going to do it, it might as well be me. 🤷🏻‍♂️

My week back at Wells Fargo was incredible, Quail Hollow is arguably the best non-major on TOUR. The facilities and of course the golf course are next level. I suspect the owner John Harris (who is also a member at Augusta) had a feeling he was trying to mimic….mission almost accomplished. Now that I’ve seen firsthand what a big tournament is like (The Players) vs a standard event, you can definitely feel the difference. This week had that depth and weight to it. Players were locked in and nothing felt casual.

Phil was on the truck a bunch this week and I was able to chat him up a little, I’m still not certain he knows who I am but I care not. When I ask him a question he responds and the conversations around his coffee and Ventus were fascinating.

My routine day-to-day has become quite settled in at this point. Team Callaway gets there early, we coffee up, Jacob runs thru the to-do list for the day, and everyone sort of disperses from there. I like to get to the range early to see what’s happening out there and suss out any potential equipment stories I can find. There is nothing like seeing the sun come up on a PGA Tour driving range, it’s surreal. The quiet of the morning with only the sound of constant compression from players getting ready to head out for practice rounds is meditative.

I do have a few friends out here beyond my relationships with most of the OEM reps. Jimmy Walker has become a pretty good buddy and I will usually follow him and his caddy Drew around when he goes out. I can see the course that way and my relationship with him is such that I can ask questions about what we are seeing without feeling like I’m getting in the way. He and Charlie Howell are the two I’d say I have that kind of relationship with. On our staff, Talor Gooch and Tom Lewis would be the ones (as of now) that are working in that direction.

One of the cool things this week was seeing something that was a prototype in March, now in its final form. The new Epic Speed 💎💎💎 Fairways are FIRE🔥🔥🔥🔥

We got about twelve heads in stock and they flew out the door. Tom Lewis, Xander, and a few others put them in for testing quickly. I heard Xander’s testing went great and I’m betting it goes in play before the PGA.

From a content standpoint, I had a doozie on Tuesday. Tom Lewis, his buddy Matt and I had a blast doing some videos for his IG that you will see soon (I chase him down a fairway and almost collapsed from exhaustion). It’s absolutely hilarious and about as much fun and laughs as I’ve had in this new gig. Tom is a GOOD kid. I’m excited for him to become even more well-known in the US. He’s great for the game.

I do need to say this out loud, the content thus far is still a work in progress. We haven’t 100% secured a recipe for what it will become so at this point it’s a Wild West exploration, and in my opinion, that’s the best way to do it. Fast and furious can be great if you learn from your mistakes. By summer’s end this Callaway/Wunder (3rd person 🤷🏻‍♂️) machine will be in full stride I reckon. I’ve never pushed or challenged myself more than I am now. My ambition to make Callaway proud of choosing me is what pushes me every day.

This company is in a ridiculously good position to transcend and I’m confident I jumped on the Callaway train at the perfect time. Momentum can be fleeting energy at times and right now you can feel the wind is at our back. We must go and go hard!!!

I hope you are all enjoying what you see thus far and trust that it’s going to get way better.

Happy Mothers day Weekend to all the Mommas:) We love you!
