Disclaimer: Both the “C” Grind and the idea of a full face of grooves on a conventional wedge have been a TOUR thing for a while. Now to be fair, the latter was done for a VERY specific player who is no longer on staff but is considered by his friend Jon Rahm to be one of the best wedge players he has ever seen. I’ll let you all run with who that might be.
I’ll use a quote from the said player as to why he preferred a full face of grooves over a conventional face…
“All great wedge players use the entire face, so why WOULDN’T I want grooves everywhere? It’s only to my advantage.”
Little else to say as to why we are doing this as a Jaws Raw Update; that quote says it all.
In regards to the “C” grind, it’s been a part of every wedge launch we have done and has been a TOUR favorite for almost two decades. In this case, it just has the Jaws Raw treatment.
This is what Wedge Legend Roger Cleveland had to say on the “C”…
“For years, the 56-degree wedge was the go-to loft, and players narrowed the heel side of the flange to lower the leading edge as you opened the face and added loft. As courses became harder to navigate with deeper bunkers and increased length of the rough, this grind was added to higher lofts – 58 or 60, depending on your gapping preference. The toe side relief was added in later years due to certain shots where you raise the wedge up on its toe while adding loft so you can allow the club to slide under the ball with loft without mass, thereby hitting a very dead shot with speed.“
“Tour players manipulate the face to add loft; when doing so, the leading edge would rise off the ground too much if the heel was not reduced in both bounce angle and width. This application to the heel has been used for years. It doesn’t affect full shots with the face square, however. Here, you want full bounce, which in this case is 13-14, as you hit the ball first. This prevents the leading from digging too much. The “C” is the perfect blend of low bounce and mid bounce which is why it has been in so many bags over the years.“
My experience…
I have been playing with the “C” since the beginning of the year, and thus far, it has been nothing short of a surgeon’s tool. Keep in mind that this grind is not as forgiving as an “S,” “X,” or “Z.” Like Apex MB, the “C” grind puts its ownness on the player. I’d call it a grind for players with “good hands”
Jaws Raw Full Face will be available in ALL grinds (but “C”) of the Jaws Raw family.
I’ll keep you posted as I go…
