On Monday, I ventured into the R/Golf SubReddit (is that how you say it?) and had an absolute blast! I’ll be doing that every Monday from 10 AM to2 PM EST, FYI. The questions came in fast, and I was actually astonished at the quality and thoughtfulness of the questions.
In my mind, Reddit is a platform for either 9,000,000 tips on how to program your car stereo or a place to sit back and make people laugh. I had NO idea the golf maniacs that lived over there.
Anyway I got a few questions that really stayed with me and ill use this time to expand:)
It seems like an obvious one, but in all honesty, I never thought of it in those terms before. Is there a swing speed threshold that makes the LS Tick? In a broad stroke, I’d say yes AND no. The CSX LS, in its truest form, was designed to launch high and not over spin. That’s the nature of that ball.
Xander on the CSX LS:)
The answer I gave them was:
“Swing speed? no/ Launch and spin. Yes. The CSX LS should be launching higher and staying in the air if it’s the right ball. If you find that the ball is losing its steam downrange it typically means its not the right spin profile.”
I had to go back afterward and really think about that answer. OF course, some players don’t swing fast enough to make that ball really sing, but the real conundrum was HOW CAN YOU TELL IF A BALL IS WRONG??
I have shot GREAT scores with the wrong ball a bunch of times, I know it to be true. I had very little idea what it looked like when something was wrong because if it was, I would always just start remodeling my bag…in hind sight I could have made my life a touch easier 🤷🏻♂️ Oh Well.
HOW DO I KNOW WHEN THE BALL AIN’T WORKING?
Here is my answer to this one:
- If you hit one solid and it doesn’t stay in the air (not enough spin) NEED CSX
- If you hit one solid and spins so much you hope it falls out of the air…quickly (too much spin) NEED CSX LS
- Around the greens: If you clip one nicely and usually it hops and stops..but it doesn’t (not enough spin) NEED CSX
- Around the greens: If you clip one nicely and expect it to hop and run out a few feet…and it doesn’t (too much spin) NEED CSX LS
- The ball in the air is just unstable (IE it has a mind of its own) NEED A CALLAWAY CHROME SOFT BALL 🙂
The right golf ball is an extension of you. A well-struck shot should have a flight that matches your intention (all things being equal). If you are over the ball, pull it back, make the swing you want, strike it as you want, and the ball flies out of some weird window and goes awry; it’s the ball, not you. ALL players have the right shot in their head, and YES, it’s possible to find a ball that will narrow the gap between your imagination and your reality.
