The Open Championship Preview 2022: Equipment Storylines from Scotland (Updated Daily)

This post will serve as a lead-in and landing spot for all things Tour Equipment from The Open Championship.

I will continue to update as new information comes in, and I will be on-site starting Sunday AM.

I’ve always wanted to do a living/breathing Tour Report so here we go!!

On Thursday I’ll be doing a WOW Journal documenting the whole experience so look out for that.

What’s happened leading up to this:

Of the four Majors, it’s The Open that brings with it the unique equipment tweaks. You will see more wedge options, lower lofted drivers, and plenty of UT builds. Over the past couple of weeks, a few builds were specific to The Open Championship, and there will be many more as we go.

Notable Builds at the Travelers:

Sam Burns may swap in his trusty Apex UW for an X21 UT. Both setups are built to drive ball flight down while keeping spin up. The MMT is notable for a mid-launch/mid-spin ball flight while the Nippon 120 is known for a LOW launch and higher spin.

See his current WITB here:

Aussie Marc Leishman, who already comes equipped with a ball flight made for links golf, came on the truck looking to double down on that. The Rogue ST 💎💎💎LS at 9.7 will be optimal for the knee-high fastballs that might be necessary if the wind blows at St. Andrews. Marc was trying to lower launch by a couple of degrees, all while maintaining current spin windows in his current gamer, which for Marc sits around 2400RPM on a stock cutter.

Christiaan Bezuidenhout was intrigued with the new Jaws RAW right out of the gate and wanted to test some lower bounce options to not only match the MD Forged wedges he has played for a while but also to harmonize with the firm turf at the “Home of Golf.” Callaway wedge specialist Simon Wood got on the grinding wheel and shaved down a good portion of the back edge, heel, and toe to create something that would sit flush against the ground. I’ll update whether these wedges make it in. the bag when I get to Scotland.

Sunday and Monday from St. Andrews

Just a man and his phone in heaven…
The Open bags might be the my favorite Major Bags…EVER.
Danny Willett put in a FULL set of Jaws Raw, he mentioned that he loves the lower ball flight and with the squared off leading edge, he can be a bit more aggressive into the ball because he has confidence it won’t dig.
Sam Burns put this X21 UT in the bag replacing his UW for the week. Sam gets about 235-240 carry out of this and on the hard St. Andrews fairways about 40-50 yards of roll.
MMT 125TX (39 inches, 18 loft, 60 lie, D3)
Callaway Performance Manager Jacob Davidson helped Si Woo Kim into a new Jaws Raw 60/08C
Abe Ancer may have finally found the unicorn he was looking for….
Same spec as the other candidates but….
Callaway Europe Tee rep Scott Pudney went a totally different direction with the shaft opting for the SUPER stable MCA Kai’li White 70 TX (43.25, No Tipping, D3) The last main obstacle was a strike slightly further up the face and a more neutral start line and I think Scotty got him REALLY close.
Abe also added this X21 UT 16 degree 1 iron with an MCA MMT HY 100TX
39.5 inches, D3

Practice Round with Sam Burns

One of the things Sam and his coach Brad Pullin are working on this week is dialing in spin off of these ROCK HARD fairways.
Go Mode.
Driver: Rogue ST 💎💎💎 (10.5@10.3, 14GB, 2GF, 59 lie)
Shaft: Fujikura Ventus Blue 7TX (45 inches, Tipped .5 , D3, 198G)

Jon Rahm Put this Apex 18 UT (21@20.25, 58.5@D@) in the bag a couple of weeks ago at ECPC. According to caddie Adam Hayes its his new favorite club
I walked with Jon today and on two occasions he got 164MPH ball speed out of it

The 150th Open headcovers are dope. Any chance they will be available for purchase?
